by | Apr 17, 2026 | News | 0 comments

The Kuranda Scenic Railway, which takes passengers between Cairns and Kuranda ranked 12th on a list of World’s best railway journeys by InsureandGo.

The research to come to this conclusion involved analysing a number of things. Mostly, looking at how quickly scenery captured attention and how long it held viewers’ gaze. This determined which rail journeys are truly the most visually captivating.

Train journeys analysed included Japan’s Sagano Romantic Train, Switzerland’s Glacier Express. Australia’s The Ghan, Taiwan’s Alishan Forest Railway, Brazil’s Serra Verde Express, Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer and South Africa’s Blue Train, to name a few. So Australia’s Kuranda Railway is up there with some of the world’s best train journeys.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway travels between Cairns and Kuranda and is a must-do when visiting Far North Queensland. The train winds its way through Far North Queensland’s Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. During the train ride you will travel through one of the oldest rainforests on earth.

Rising from sea level to 327 metres, the journey to Kuranda passes spectacular waterfalls as it moves through the stunning Din Din (Barron Gorge). And provides fabulous views back to Cairns.

On reaching the Kuranda Railway Station, walk around and maybe enjoy a cuppa in the tea rooms. Maybe see a waterfall and return by train or take the Skyrail providing fabulous views over the rainforest while returning to Cairns.
