What is Puffing Billy?
Puffing Billy is Australia’s premier preserved steam railway. Built in 1900, the train is famous for its open-side carriages where passengers can sit and dangle their legs outside of the train. You will find Puffing Billy in the Dandenong Ranges, east of Melbourne.

Where is the Puffing Billy Running Festival Held?
The Puffing Billy Running Festival is held in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne. The festival’s events and finish line are centred around Emerald Lake Park in the town of Emerald, with courses weaving through the surrounding mountain landscapes.
Who Can Run Against the Train?
Anyone can run against the train. Day one of the Festival will feature a 1.5km Kids Dash and a 5km Family Fun Run / Walk. It will be held on Saturday 12 September at Emerald Lake Park, with the echoing toots and puffs of Puffing Billy propelling all participants forward!
Then, on Sunday 13 September, up to 3,000 participants take on the challenge of a lifetime, racing against two steam locomotives from Belgrave to Emerald in the heart-pounding 13.5 km ‘Classic’ Run.

Does it Cost to Race Against the Train?
There is a cost to enter the 13.5km classic. Regular cost is $110. Late and on the day cost is $125.00. You can register up until 1 hr prior to race start.
Do I have to Run against Puffing Billy?
Of course not. Spectators looking to cheer on runners can embark on an unforgettable journey themselves, hopping aboard the iconic Puffing Billy and potentially even surpassing the racing runners! The state-of-the-art Puffing Billy Lakeside Visitor Centre within Emerald Lake Park hosts the Festival’s Finish Zone precinct with free massages, family entertainment, music and sponsor activities.
