Big Things of Australia

Yep, big things in Australia are a thing. I’m not sure why, but they are. And believe me, Australia has many big things scattered around the country. So if you are interested, or not, to see big things in Australia, read on and see how many big things I have seen, and that you can add to your list as you do a road trip or a big lap of Australia.

What is a Big Thing of Australia?

Big things of Australia are basically huge sculptures of things relating to a town or area. Like there is a big pineapple on the Sunshine Coast where lots of pineapples are grown. There is the big marino in Goulburn as it is sheep country.

Where do you find a Big Thing in Australia?

Big things in Australia are located all over the place. I believe there are over 150 of these big things spread across Australia.

Big things of Australia

I’ve listed the big things I’ve seen under each state, so if you are travelling in that state, keep an eye out for them. I haven’t seen them all (yet), so I will be adding to this list as I continue to discover Australia.

Big Things in NSW

The Big Banana, Coffs Harbour

#RoadTripPacificHighwaySydneytoBrisbane

Opened in 1964, the Big Banana was one of the first, and remains one of the most popular, Big Things in Australia. It’s a can’t miss in Coffs Harbour as you drive along the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane. You will find it at the front of a banana plantation that has evolved with an award-winning fun park and water park amongst its attractions. But you cannot miss having your photo taken with the 13 metre long landmark.

The Big Merino, Goulburn

A Big Merino statue celebrating the wool industry at Goulburn.

The Big Merino was built in 1985 as a monument to the Goulburn region’s fine wool industry. And Rambo, the big merino is big, measuring some 15.2 metres high and 18 metres long. Goulburn has long been a pit-stop for anyone travelling along the Hume Highway but with the upgrade of the Hume Highway to bypass many towns, the popularity of visiting the Big Merino waned. However, in 2007, Rambo was relocated 800 metres closer to the highway and is near a great pie shop, the golden arches and a petrol station thus making a visit to see Rambo, a must-see in Goulburn. And you can go inside the Big Merino to check out some souvenirs.

The Golden Guitar, Tamworth

Tamworth is regarded as the country music capital of Australia and every year it hosts the Country Music Awards in January. And it is in Tamworth that you will find one of the best things of Australia. Yep, the 12 metre high, golden guitar.

Big Things in Queensland

The Big Pineapple, Sunshine Coast

Big Pineapple at the pineapple plantation on Queenslands Sunshine Coast.

Located in Woombye, on the Sunshine Coast is the iconic 16-metre high Big Pineapple. It was first opened in 1971 on the existing Sunshine Plantation where you can go on a train through the pineapple fields before enjoying some pineapple in the store.

Big Things in Victoria

Giant Koala

Giant Koala Dadswell Bridge, Victoria.

You can find the giant Koala in a town called Dadswells Bridge in Victoria. It is some 14 metres high and to be honest, it looks a little mad and creepy to me! There is only a coffee shop, souvenir shop and rest area at the giant Koala and if you blink, you might miss out.

Ned Kelly

Ned Kelly Bushranger Large Statue At Glenrowan.

In the town of Glenrowan you will find a big statue of Ned Kelly the bushranger. Glenrowan is infamous for ‘seige’ between Ned Kelly and his gang and the Police. Ned was eventually captured here and taken by train to Melbourne where he was trialled and hung. His last words were ‘such is life’. I love visiting Glenrowan as you can walk around the seige area. There is also a new museum where you can discover more about Glenrowan and Ned Kelly and his gang. Glenrowan is a great historical stop and a break from driving the Hume Highway
