Driving the Great Ocean Road is a ‘must do’ when visiting Victoria. The spectacular coastline is simply mind blowing. You will see how the ocean and other elements have eroded and shaped the coastline in this area. There are many natural structures to see including the 12 Apostles. Seeing this spectacular coastline is even more mind blowing if you go up in a helicopter. Here is my experience of seeing the Great Ocean Road by helicopter.

As you drive along the Great Ocean Road there are many places to stop and view the spectacular coastline. One place we pulled into was the 12 Apostles Marine National Park Visitor Centre. While parking the car we noticed a number of helicopters taking off and landing. but at the time our aim was to see the 12 Apostles. So we walked to the vantage points and viewed them.

This particular day that we were driving along the section of the Great Ocean Road on our Great Ocean Road road trip was a grey, overcast and windy. Not the most pleasant of days but none the less, it did not take away from how spectacular the Great Ocean Road is. In fact, you got a greater understanding of how this coastline has been carved out because you could see how the rough seas and wind were beating the coastline.

As we headed back to the carpark we noticed the helicopters again. It was a unanimous decision to walk past our car and head toward an open field with a little office and just see what was going on. It didn’t take us long to purchase a ticket for a helicopter ride.

As we walked out of the helicopter office, we were given life jackets and underwent a safety review. Then we were sitting in the helicopter and within seconds of the doors closing we were rising into the air.

It wasn’t long and we were flying at a constant altitude and our helicopter pilot was explaining what was what. We headed along the coast to what is often referred to as the Shipwreck Coast. This is where a number of boats were shipwrecked due to heavy sees. There was Loch And Gorge, Mutton Bird Island, Island Arch, The Razorback and other natural wonders.

Then there were the 12 Apostles, well actually only 8 as the other four have collapsed into the sea. You can’t say much about them apart from “wow”. If you thought they were impressive the ground lookouts wait till you see them from the air, “wow’.

And then it is over. Time to land. What an experience. But if you don’t want to go up in a helicopter you don’t have to as there are plenty of other opportunities along the Great Ocean Road to stop and enjoy this rugged and beautiful coastline.
