It was a sad time in early 2024 when severe weather and flash flooding swept across NSW’s Blue Mountains. Leaving devastation in its wake, the weather impacted large and popular attractions in the area including Jenolan Caves which has been closed since the storm.
For a couple of years Jenolan Caves has been strictly off-limits but now, after restorations, it’s making a long-awaited return. Still not opening until 2027, the opening is much anticipated.
The Jenolan Caves are the oldest of its kind in the world – dating back more than 300 million years. Thankfully, the 2024 weather event left the cave system largely intact. However, the weather event caused significant damage to areas around the caves. Roads were swept away, landslides filled Blue Lake with debris and the historic Caves House was inundated with floodwater. The damage left many wondering would the caves ever re-open to the public again.
Since 2024, multiple governing bodies came together with the Jenolan Caves Reserve Trust to coordinate an extensive recovery effort. While an opening date is yet to be confirmed, it is expected Jenolan Caves to reopen in early 2027.
Things to expect include:
- an upgraded visitor carpark, future proofed to better withstand extreme weather events and improved access for vehicle flow.
- The historic Caves House is getting a new lease on life with new features such as air-conditioning in guest room.
- Walking trails across the site will be revitalised with a new boardwalk at Blue Lake.
Having visited the Jenolan Caves a number of times throughout my life, I am one of many who will be waiting to visit the caves again.
