One of the most popular annual winter events in Victoria is the Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill, Ballarat. It draws people from all over Victoria every year. And I can now say, it is one of my favourite winter events.

Held during the month of July when Australia is in the midst of winter, Sovereign Hill puts on a colourful show. Thousands of visitors of all ages brave the cold at Sovereign Hill to experience this wonderful event. Yep, if you’ve ever wanted to experience a white Christmas, you don’t have to fly to the northern hemisphere to experience one, because you can experience it at the Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill.

Firstly, What is Sovereign Hill?

Sovereign Hill is an open air museum. It is one of Victoria’s most iconic attractions. It is a recreated village where you step back in time to 1851 when gold was discovered in Ballarat. There are historic buildings and costumed staff adding to the experience.

During the day, you can enjoy the classic gold rush activities at Sovereign Hill. Like gold panning, heritage craft workshops, underground mine tours, entertainment of the era and some good food. And then at night watch the historic streetscape light up.

What is Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill?

Winter Wonderlights is an annual Christmas in July festival at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, Victoria. It features colourful light projections on 1850s historic buildings, faux snowfalls on Main Street with wonderful festive family activities. Santa even makes an experience.

My Night at Winter Wonderlights

This year I went with my adult son and we had the best time, proving it doesn’t matter what age you are to enjoy this magical event.

We came on a Melbourne weekend escape. We drove up on the Saturday morning and bought tickets for the 8pm – 10pm evening session. We chose this time because it would be dark and we wanted to see all the lights. And we weren’t disappointed – Sovereign Hill was lit up like a massive Christmas tree.

Main Street of Sovereign Hill was where the main action was. And it was packed with people. The facades of all the buildings were lit up with bright coloured lights. It was a little annoying having so many people there, you could hardly move at one stage when the show started. And everyone with a phone was taking photos or filming the show.

The show started at 8.45pm. This is when for an hour music is played, lights on the buildings change colours and faux snow teams out onto the crowd. Sounds a little tacky, but believe me, it isn’t. It was quite mesmerising watching the show.

And then you walk around looking at all the buildings and their changing lights. There are fires lit that you can stand around to warm up. You can purchase some food or a drink from the old saloon and walk around looking at the buildings lit up and fairy lights throughout the place. Let me show you instead.

How You Can Enjoy Winter Wonderlights Sovereign Hill

Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill only last for some 3 weeks in July and usually occur when the winter Victorian school holidays are.

In 2026, it went from Friday 26 June to Saturday 19 July, 2026. As Winter Wonderlights only goes for 3 weeks, you need to be organised.

Where is Sovereign Hill?

Sovereign Hill is in Ballarat. Ballarat is a major inland city in the Central Highlands of Victoria. It is located approximately 110 kilometres northwest of Melbourne (about a 1.5-hour drive or train ride).

How to Get to Sovereign Hill?

You can get to Sovereign Hill by driving along the A8 Highway that links Melbourne to Adelaide. Or, you can catch a vLine train from Melbourne. Both options take around 1.5 hours in travelling time. It is far easier if you have a car to then get around Ballarat.

You could visit Sovereign Hill on a Melbourne day trip however, if staying for the lights it would be wise to have a weekend getaway in Ballarat, as there are so many other things to see and do in Ballarat.

I stayed at the Eureka Ballarat Lodge Hotel and can highly recommend it. The room was large and clean with an ensuite bathroom. There were cooking facilities, well a kettle, toaster and microwave in the room. This enabled to heat some dinner before we went to the Winter Wonderlights. The beds were comfy and we had Netflix on the TV. It is across the road from the Eureka Centre, another great place to visit while in Ballarat.

My best Tips for Visiting the Winter Wonderlights

• Book your ticket in advance so you get the session you want.
• Rug up, it is sure to be cold especially at night. And it can also be wet so it is a good idea to check the weather and dress appropriately. I’d say a warm jacket, beanie and gloves are a must.
• Parking is free onsite though when we got there for 8pm, the car parks were full and we ended up parking in a side street.
• If spending the day in Sovereign Hill plan out your day, there are so many activities to do, you won’t want to miss out.
• Winter Wonderlights spectacular begins when the sun goes down. Ensure you know showtime and be in the main street a bit before to get a good spot.
• There is a restaurant in Sovereign Hill but best to ook in advance if you would like dinner. There are other food stalls open otherwise take some food and snacks with you.
