However, you are feeling nervous and overwhelmed with all the decisions you need to make before you set off. And one of the biggest questions you have been asking yourself is how you will fund full-time travel around Australia.
Well, having travelled around Australia a few times doing the big lap of Oz and many road trips, I consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to funding my travels around Australia. Not having a rich relative who funded any of my trips I had to fund them myself. So in this post I am giving you my best tips for how you can fund your upcoming travel around Australia.
And travelling Australia full-time may not be as expensive as you think. Many people use it as a way to geoarbitrage in Australia.

How to Fund Full-time Travel Around Australia
1. Save, Save & Save
Saving for a full-time travel around Australia is the first tip on my list. But how much must you save to undertake full-time travel around Australia? How long is a piece of string! What I suggest is you work out a Big Lap of Oz Budget of potentially what it might cost to travel Australia. Things to include are:
- Accommodation – will you buy a caravan and stay in caravan parks or free camp. Perhaps you are interested to car camping or tent camping. Or will you stay in bricks and mortar accommodation such as hostels or hotels.
- Vehicle. The accommodation you have chosen will determine the vehicle you will need. If buying a caravan your vehicle needs the capacity to tow it.
- Petrol
- Food and entertainment
- Entrance fees to sights, national parks
- Bills/Vehicle Maintenance, registration and servicing
Once you have a potential cost to travel around Australia, you then need to save and reach that goal. Saving for travel might mean giving up a few things.
2. Sell Your Property or Rent it Out
Second on my list of how to fund full-time travel around Australia is selling your property or renting it out while you travel to pay for your travel. Some people sell up as they do not know when they will return and may move to another area in Australia to live. Others like to keep their property and rent it out. There is no right or wrong answer here, it is personal choice.
3. Use Your Savings, Long Service Leave, Superannuation or Pension
Many travelling Australia full-time use their savings, long service leave, superannuation or pension to cover their costs while travelling around Australia. Lucky you if you are receiving government money or hard earned long service leave and superannuation to cover travelling costs. A question you can ask yourself is, will you have any money left over for when you finish travelling to cover your living costs?
4. Make Money Working while Travelling
Don’t stress if you don’t have thousands to travel full-time around Australia with. Why not make money working while travelling. There are plenty of jobs out there you can pick up as you travel around Australia. And many don’t have an age limit. As long as you are fit and healthy and have the skills, work can be found. Use my 6 methods I use when I arrive in a town to find work. I also use websites, apps and check out Facebook groups/pages where jobs can be advertised.
Jobs you can do, but not limited to include the following. And yes, you may need to make a commitment of a season or a few months at least.
Work you could find includes:
- Continue your current job by requesting to work remotely.
- Caravan park jobs
- Working in a hostel
- Busking
- Work online
- Mining
- Hospitality
- Offer services – dog sitting, haircuts, massage, yoga, etc.
- Start a business – sell online or have product to sell.
- Station work
- Nanny
- Trades
- Follow the Harvest Trail fruit and vegetable picking
- Blogging/Vlogging
- Do a season in the snow
5. Obtain Sponsorship
The last way I suggest you can fund your full-time travels around Australia is actually for the lucky few, and that is through sponsorship. Brands are keen to get their name out there and they often seek travellers who are happy to promote them. In return, they provide ‘free’ products and services. But first, you will need to prove you are worthy for the sponsorship. When starting out this can be hard. So start a blog, or a Facebook page or some other media, post regularly, gain followers and then you can show prospective sponsors why they should sponsor you.
